Like your Sankofa Deodorants, there’s a personal story behind Moskito. However, Moskito evoked a lot more emotional perturbation than I’d envisaged. The emotions started unraveling as it became evident that we’d been able to make something that can effectively repulse mosquitos. This triggered memory episodes that made me cry – something I very rarely do.
As you may be aware, malaria, considered the world’s most important parasitic infectious disease, is a major contributor to deaths and health calamities in our sub-Saharan Africa.
Growing up in Ghana, I was often ‘eaten’ by malaria-carrying mosquitos. Everyone in Ghana got malaria regularly but, due to a very weak immune system, I felt my experience was quite different. I had malaria very often, sometimes getting hospitalized three to four days a week. In fact, I’d been in the hospital for four days prior to my Bachelor’s degree graduation ceremony but was never gonna miss that occasion for any reason. In spite of being very frail and barely able to move, I sneaked out of the hospital and, slowly but relentlessly, walked to join my colleagues on the podium.
I’ve hardly lived in Ghana for the last two decades but I know my body is still crap at fighting malaria because Sonje and I went and lived there for almost a-year-and-a-half and things didn’t go very well. You’d think having been born and raised there, I’d have built some level of immunity against the disease but, no, the hospitalizations continued. There you go!
Our kids bug us a lot to take them to Ghana but the one thing that had been holding us back a bit – apart from the trip’s expensiveness – was our lack of success in finding for them an effective, natural mosquito repellent, i.e. one that works without DEET, picaridin, permethrin, and all the other nasties. So, as you can imagine, we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to make Moskito which the family can use.
I must say that it never was our intention to make Moskito only for the family. We also had in mind people visiting or living in areas endemic with mosquito-borne diseases. Specifically, making Moskito is our little effort toward reducing mosquito-related child mortality and infectious diseases around the globe. And to all the other children and adults out there who react undesirably to mosquito bites and hate getting bitten, we didn’t forget you. It’s to you all that we cheerfully dedicate Moskito.
